Conversion Rate Optimization is about improving how well your website turns traffic into action. It is easy to calculate. For each conversion action you have on your site (for example, filling out a contact form), take the amount of people who have visited the page containing the conversion in a month and divide it by the amount of people who went through with it.

For example:

  • If 100 people visit your site and 2 fill out your form, your conversion rate is 2%.
  • If you make smart changes and now 5 people fill out your form, your conversion rate is 5%.

The goal of conversion rate optimization in web development and design is to increase that percentage so that you’ll get more leads, calls, or sales from the same amount of traffic. Don’t be too alarmed by what seem like extremely low conversion rates. 2% is about an average rate, 5% is great, and above 10% is exceptional. The idea is, you want to run ads and search engine optimization to bring more people to your site alongside CRO. That way, if you manage to get 200 people to your site every day and you’ve also doubled your conversion rate from 2% to 4%, you will be getting 8 conversions instead of the two you started at. If single sales provide a lot of value for your business, this is nothing to scoff at: you’ve effectively quadrupled monthly sales through your site!
